Entertainment for Chinese New Year’s Celebration

There are many different types of Chinese New Year’s Party Entertainment, but one must-have is the Dragon Dance or Lion Dance. These traditional Chinese dances are a big spectacle and an important part of planning the Lantern Festival or a Chinese New Year’s Celebration.

The Lion Dance is a cultural tradition that dates back centuries and is said to bring good luck and fortune. The Lion dance or Dragon dance may also be seen at business grand openings, special occasions, and wedding ceremonies, as well as being used to honor special guests.

If you’re hiring entertainment for a Chinese New Year’s Party, keep in mind there are two types of Chinese lion dance, the Northern Lion and the Southern Lion.

The Chinese Northern Lion Dance is often performed by a pair of male and female lions that look like Pekingese or Fu Dogs. Acrobatics is typically added to the dance with lifts, balancing, climbing, and other stunts happening during the performance

The Southern Lion looks quite different with a single horn. The most popular style of Southern Lion used by kung fu schools is Fo Shan. Traditional Fo Shan lions have moving teeth, tongues, and eyes that look left and right.

When booking a lion dance for an event, it is very common to hire live musicians (often part of the lion dance group) as the dance is typically performed to the beat of a drum or cymbals. Although highly entertaining, there’s one big drawback to the lion dance: the length of the dance is too short.

Most lion dances are around ten minutes in length, although some are as long as twenty minutes. This is a perfect length for the lion dance, but it’s natural for event planners to desire a full hour of entertainment at corporate events. This can easily be accomplished by booking additional entertainment that starts after the lion dance. A popular choice is hiring a magician.

Wu 巫 is the Chinese term for a sorcerer

The performance of magic has a long history in China with secrets passed down from past generations. Chinese Emperors in the Han Dynasty were some of the first known employers of magicians. The magicians would cause objects to burst into flames in an effort to scare criminals and citizens into obedience.

One of the most popular ancient magic tricks is the magical appearance of fish tanks, cups, and large bowls of water from under a robe or magic cloth. The Chinese Linking Rings, where solid metal rings magically link and unlink, have become popular with modern-day magicians worldwide from every culture.

CHINESE NEW YEAR ENTERTAINMENT CASE STUDY:

Markham, Ontario – Manulife Financial

Magician Sam Pearce appeared in Markham to entertain the executives of Manulife Financial, the world’s fifth-largest insurance company, during their in-person Chinese New Year’s Celebration.

The celebration was hosted at Elegance Banquet Hall with 100 guests from Manulife’s office in attendance. After the reception and meal, the Markham Magician stepped on stage to entertain the corporate group at the Chinese New Year’s Celebration.

Sam amazed guests at the corporate event with his incredible magic and interactive comedy routines. The magician’s engaging style of entertainment got the entire crowd involved in the show and even turned some audience volunteers into the stars of the show. During the Chinese New Year’s entertainment, Sam juggled giant knives, escaped from a straight jacket, and magically made a missing $100 bill reappear inside of a lemon!  The lighthearted comedy entertainment was the perfect addition to the insurance company’s Chinese New Year’s Party and received positive reviews from the audience and Manulife’s event planner.

Review from Manulife Financial’s Chinese New Year’s Party

“Sam has been a great partner to work with… especially since we only do this kind of event once a year. His flexibility and confidence in his workflow had really empowered our own team on the evening.

We would definitely recommend Sam to others.”
